Chaise lounges have a long history that dates back to the ancient Eqyptian days when royalty took advantage of relaxing on day beds. You can find chaise lounges, or day beds as they were called years ago, in many different cultures too. A long with Ancient Eqypt, the ancient societies of Rome, Greece and China also enjoyed the prized furniture. Up until recent times, the chaise lounge or day bed, was usually reserved for royalty or the wealthy. The early Native Americans were the exception where many of them enjoyed sleeping in lounges they called hamacas.
Many of the day beds in medieval times and the Middle Ages, had curtains around them for warmth and privacy and to show how important they are. The popularity of the chaise lounge continued through out the centuries and into the late 19th and early 20th century when psychiatrists used them for their patients to lie down on while analyzing them.
Although through out the ages, chaise lounges were used outdoors as well as indoors, they gained popularity for outdoor use in the 20th century as cruise ships made their appearance. Soon, many were relaxing in patio chaise lounges in their own backyards. Today, it would be rare to go to any swimming pool and not find chaise lounges available.

If the wood is teak, it likely won’t require more than the oil, as teak has natural anti-mildew properties. Any other type of wood, I would consider a marine spar varnish.

I love the classic look of wood chaise lounges. Relax on some comfy chaise lounge pillows with a cool drink in hand and enjoy the summer sun by the pool. It doesn’t get any better.
